stoic :: it's difficult to get a rise out of nixon. he is intensely composed and always has been. many people blame his short military background, but his calmness has stemmed from long before that. he doesn't see the reasons behind getting all worked up over things that you cannot possibly change. he knows his fate and he's accepted it. he came here to be rehabilitated for his PTSD and he is determined to look at this experience as just that. he's being helped. it's the only way that he can look at it. in his mind, channeling his energy into handling his fire manipulation is much better than thinking about the past. so, he remains almost emotionless. many people tell him he needs to lighten up, loosen up, but that's not the case.
fun-loving :: he knows how to have fun. in fact, he loves to have fun. he can be found pranking the next staff member along with the regular trouble making crowd, but it's all out of enjoyment. he would never do something to intentionally hurt someone, and that includes the staff members. he doesn't hold this festering hate for people that he doesn't even truly know. he doesn't know their stories, he doesn't know what brought them here. he doesn't know if they were forced into this career or not, so he doesn't have the right to judge. he's just living his life. whatever is left of it, anyway.
optimistic :: he doesn't allow things to get him down. he isn't that kind of individual. he believes that the outcome of any situation can be what you want it to be, if you go about it the right way, with the right thoughts. while he'd never force anyone to believe in the positives, he is a firm believer in looking at the bright side of things. he's a 'the glass is half full' kind of person, and even being in this place for two years has not chased that out of him. he still has his wits about him, he still knows who he is, and he still knows where he came from. he has those memories to hold onto, and right now, that's more than enough for him.
friendly :: growing up in a big family has made him a social person. while he doesn't really speak unless it's necessary, or if he has something to say, he can be found greeting the newcomers here. he tries to make it easier for them because he knows how difficult the transition can be. the scared, timid people all need a friendly face to look at, so he's more than happy to offer himself. he can start a conversation out of nothing even though he isn't a big talker. if the situation calls for it, he won't shut up. it's all for the benefit of whoever he's talking to. he's a people pleaser and he doesn't like seeing those around him depressed and upset. he does whatever he can to put even the smallest of smiles on their faces. everyone has to find one tiny thing to smile about, even trapped in this shit hole.
REACTIONS:
childhood :: growing up was normal for him. he had two loving parents, and two older sisters that loved him dearly. he was spoiled rotten, not only because he was the only boy of the family, but also because he was the baby. his mother showered him with affection and his father took him on trips all of the time to work on that father/son bond. nixon grew up in a positive setting, and he never struggled with anything. his mother was a prominent lawyer in a partnered firm, and his father owned his own business, which was a well known repair garage in their hometown of dylan, montana. nixon was raised with strong family values and his mother always wanted him to be the gentleman. he always did his school work as he got older, and he excelled in not only his studies, but sports as well. he loved soccer, and still does today. swimming also became a personal favorite of his, and when he reached middle school, he was able to join both those teams.
young adulthood :: nixon quickly became a part of the popular crowd when he reached his freshman year of high school. his family was well known throughout the system, and everyone seemed to want to be his friend. forever the gentleman, as his mother and father had raised him to be, he included everyone as much as he possibly could. he didn't believe in cliques, and even though he was deemed "popular" he spoke to anyone that wanted to have a conversation with him, and he hung out with whoever asked to hang out with him. he wasn't biased, he wasn't prejudiced just because someone was different than him. he was raised with better values than that, and he carried them throughout his high school career. he quickly became the captain of the soccer team, and the co-captain of the swim team. he was good at what he did, and he threw himself into practices. because of that, he became in rather good shape, which only helped him when it came to him joining the army. he always wanted to be in the marines, even from a young age. his grand father would always tell him war stories, and despite his mother's chagrin over her son's dreams, she supported him with her whole heart. his father was proud once he enlisted, and his sisters did everything that they could for him before he left for his tour.
military career :: boot camp flew by for the young eighteen year old. he was due to serve in afghanistan with his fellow troops, and was content on being a private first class. he didn't need to move up through the ranks, he didn't want to. however, his superiors thought highly of him, and he swiftly moved up the ranks to becoming a sergeant. that was when they went on their first mission and it turned out successful. the nights were hard for them all, but it was something that they loved doing, fighting for their country. when he came back from his first tour, it was obvious that he was different in the eyes of his family, but they never said anything. if anything, he just seemed more mature, more closed off, more stoic. they never judged, and his parents were proud of him, as were his sisters. however, his time home was short lived, and he was re-deployed where there were re-emerging problems in afghanistan.
his second tour was when everything changed. he didn't even get to finish the full two years. halfway through his first, his group came across a roadside bomb that no one had been able to find. without warning, the entire train of army vehicles started exploding one by one as the ground beneath them gave way. nixon's vehicle was at the end of the line, and therefore received the least amount of ricochet. but it didn't save the men in the rest of the line, and it certainly didn't save the men in nixon's vehicle. he was in the back, helping one of the men that had already been wounded during a scouting mission that day when everything happened. he doesn't remember anything other than screaming and explosions. his hearing is affected in his right ear because of the force of the explosion, and he has noticeable scars on the right side of his face, the lines traveling down his neck from the debris that hit him. he lost all of his friends that day and when he was well enough, he was diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder. he walks with a permanent limp because of injuries that he sustained that day, and while he has been given a cane, he hates using it because it makes him feel weak.
present :: weeks after nixon's initial therapy sessions started, it was obvious that progress was not being made. it's hard for someone to get over loss like that, but nixon never seemed to let it get him down, especially when he was at home. he was in denial, and still partly is. they gave him the option of coming to chaspel heights. everything in the brochure looked positive and he figured it was worth a try. what he didn't realize, like everyone else, was that he would never escape once he signed up. while his family can still visit him here under dire circumstances, he could only really write letters to them and receive letters from them. he's not lonely because he's made friends, but he does miss his family because of how close they were. however, he's making the most of his life here because that's all that he can do.
