that's not to say that rio isn't a good person, because she is. deep down, she desperately wants to mean something to someone, but her cold and stand-offish ways are what, in her opinion, keep her safe from getting hurt. if she doesn't allow anyone to get close to her, then she can't lose them. she's got this irrational fear of loss in her life because of the death of her mother and her father, so she isn't one to accept friendships lightly. if you do manage to befriend her though, you will have a friend for life. her loyalty knows no bounds, and when she's surrounded by people, she's who she really wants to be.
the girl is just honestly misguided. she's never had someone to rely on, and has never really had a parental figure in her life. because of that she has become a very solitary individual, and is known to lash out when she feels threatened. sarcasm is her second language, but don't let the tough act fool you. she's really a kind person deep down, if only someone could get that side to show. she usually puts others before herself, depending on the situation. although she's quick to judge, she likes to give people the benefit of the doubt because it would be what she would want in the same situation. putting people before herself is how she got arrested in the first place. that isn't to say that she's a selfless person, because she's not. she just gets caught up in the moment and sometimes forgets about what is the most intelligent thing to do. she's not dumb, but she relies heavily on split second decisions and choices that aren't always the right ones. she's impulsive and slightly unreliable, as well as unpredictable. she's a wild card, and as defiant as they come.
she's an interesting person, and well worth getting to know, if anyone is willing to give it a try.
REACTIONS: her parents were the happy couple that every newlywed couple wished to be. while maria was already pregnant by the time that she married daniel, they couldn't be happier. their child was not the only reason for their marriage, for they truly loved one another. when maria gave birth to a healthy baby girl nine months later, things seemed to only get better from there.
daniel quickly climbed the ladder in his career, causing him to make a few enemies along the way. but there was no one as bitter as clark, his co-worker of eighteen years. in clark's opinion, he had done the same things that daniel had done, and he should be getting the same perks, the same rewards. however, daniel had a better work ethic, which is something that their employers noticed, and something that only fueled clark's hate.
when daniel was promoted to the position of senior manage when rio turned ten, clark had finally had more than enough. he set about setting up a plan to murder the entire coleson family. he would make daniel watch. however, everything went wrong. as soon as he broke into the coleson house on that fateful night, he wasn't predicting that the coleson family had guns in the home. he also wasn't expecting the ten year old daughter, rio, to know how to shoot those guns. clark woke her up while he shot daniel and maria, and rio didn't hesitate to pull the trigger. her father had always told her to defend herself and her family, and this was what she thought called for the defense.
however, her actions came much too late, for her parents were already dead, murdered in a jealous rage. she could never forget what happened, but she did slowly move on when she was shuffled into the state system. she was given the best psychiatric care and she was really starting to make improvements. however, when she started high school, everything seemed to change.
rio got involved with the wrong crowds because of how impressionable she was, and she soon found that she sort of belonged there. so she became rebellious and abrasive, impossible to deal with and absolutely labeled as a loose canon. no one knew when she was going to snap, but it was going to happen soon.
she got involved in small crimes since she turned eighteen, such as shop lifting and car jacking and the like. there was never anything big. however, when her 'gang' asked her to be the look out for some sort of heist, she agreed. they didn't tell her what it entailed, they didn't tell her that they would be killing someone that had crossed them the wrong way. she just did as she was told, and when she noticed the police lights flashing in the distance, she set off the signal. she had no idea that she had just allowed her friends to escape while she took the rap for the murder.
she's been in jail ever since. however, recent events have occurred, and they gave her a choice. she could rot in prison for the rest of her days, or she could come here. not really knowing what this place involved, she supposed it had to be better than the solitary confinement she was in during her stay at the prison. she agreed, and has only just arrived. she has no idea what lays in store for her.

irritated.
that's what she was. she couldn't believe that she had agreed to come to this hell hole. it was seriously lacking in appearance, and she felt disgusted and uneasy as soon as she was pushed through the front doors, the hand cuffs still cutting into her wrists. she was accustomed to the cool metal against her pale skin for years now, but there was something definitive about it now.
looking over her shoulder, she watched as the squad leader handed his deputy the keys to the handcuffs of their most unruly charge, and sent him to do the dirty deed of freeing her hands. she was soon granted the freedom that she had been yearning for, and she twisted her wrists around, cracking the stiff joints and thanking the deputy for his kindness. he was absolutely confused, but she had no right to take her anger out on him. he hadn't gotten her landed in this place. she had done it to herself. sighing in her frustration, she stepped up to the front desk with the deputy as her only guide, and they announced her name and her other basic information that would get her enrolled here.
rio's attention was pulled elsewhere as the deputy and the clerk talked over what she would need to stay here. seemed she would need to go under an evaluation before her rehabilitation could really start. balking at the idea of talking to a shrink, she opened her mouth to say something, but the deputy seemed to cut her off with a look. grumbling to herself, rio stood off to the side, still looking around them with a disconnected interest. she wasn't sure what to expect from this place, but she certainly wasn't going to get comfortable. she didn't plan on staying here long because she had it in her mind to escape. taking the folder that was handed to her with a fake smile, she said her goodbyes to the deputy and then took off down the hallway after one of the employees. she wasn't going to be happy for very long, that was for sure.
